Why use sign language...
There are many good reasons to use sign language
with babies and young children.
Communication is not just about words…in
fact words only account for 7% of face to face communication! The remaining
93% is made up of tone of voice, body language and gestures.
Every child instinctively understands that using
gestures such as waving to get attention or stretching out their arms
to ask Mummy to pick them up gets results.
Sign language helps to build on these non verbal
signals and gives your child access to a rich vocabulary of signs that
will allow him to fully interact with you and enable you both to share
your feelings and thoughts
It is impossible to put a value on the benefits of being able to communicate with your child before he or she has learnt to speak, but increasingly many parents and carers are beginning to recognise the importance of clear, two way, communication with pre-verbal children.
Research has shown that babies and young children really can communicate their needs and feelings through the use of sign language. By learning to sign both you and your child will be able tell each other what you are thinking and feeling whilst increasing your child’s vocabulary and communication skills.
